Launch of a campaign to raise public awareness of the protection of children’s rights
ZAGREB, 20 March 2022 – Children’s rights are under daily threat and reports of child abuse and neglect are on the rise, a panel told the last week in which a campaign for the protection of children’s rights was launched. .
“In 2021, the Office of the Children’s Ombudsman received 269 reports of child abuse and neglect, 30 more than in 2020. A total of 448 children and 19 groups of children have been exposed to abuse and neglect,” reads a report from the office.
Ombudsman Helenca Pirnat Dragičević said that while state authorities recognize the importance of comprehensive action to prevent child abuse and neglect, there is a need to implement education and prevention campaigns and to continue to raise awareness that violence is unacceptable and must be reported, including suspicions of violence against children.
The foundation “Croatia for Children” has launched the campaign “Make a small step a big one”, which will last until the end of the year. The aim of the campaign is to raise public awareness of children’s rights, which are often under threat, and the possibilities of protecting them.
The head of the foundation, Renata Gubić, said that during its 13 years of existence, the foundation had obtained HRK 105 million (14 million euros) for children in need, with its programs having covered more than 80,000 children.
Marija Barilić, from the Ministry of Work, Pensions, Family and Social Policy, said that the government is implementing many activities aimed at improving the status of children and their protection, including legislative activities aimed at reducing the risk of child poverty, as well as the guarantee of financing for the needs of children. and the promotion of non-institutional care for children.
“The care of children is at the center of all policies, especially for children who are in the institutional care system. In 2021, 145 children were adopted, which is the highest number to date” , she said.
