The Little Traverse Choral Society begins rehearsals for the holiday program

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — The Little Traverse Choral Society has begun rehearsals for its holiday programs, which are to be played Dec. 3-4.

Performances this year will include the traditional French Christmas carol, “Noël Nouvelet,” performed by a brass quintet, and “Sing We Now of Christmas,” arranged by Audrey Snyder and performed A Capella.

“A Star in the East” by Gwyneth Walker, a piece in three movements each of which is based on a Christmas carol: “Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella;” “In the middle of the dreary winter;” and the jazz “Rise Up, Shepherd and Follow” will also be featured. Walker has a connection to the region in that she is currently composer-in-residence with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and also recently wrote the Great Lakes cantata, which will be performed here in 2023.

The Saturday, December 3 concert will be at Petoskey United Methodist Church beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, December 4 afternoon concert will be at First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Springs beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.

The choir welcomes André Strydom, MMus, LTCL as its new musical director. Strydom is also Director of Music Ministries at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Choirmaster of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. Ellen Kendall from Charlevoix continues to be their pianist. A brass quintet, a cello and percussion will also be there.

The Little Traverse Choral Society is made up of singers of all ages from Northern Michigan. Its 2022-2023 concert season is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, administered by the Northwest Michigan Arts and Culture Network.
